Advance Directives

SAN ANTONIO, TX - In my first two columns, I tried to encourage women and men to seek out preventive health care. Preventing conditions or catching them early can make a big difference in a person’s quality of life.
This month, I’ll be sharing information about an even more serious topic—advance directives. Advance directives or living wills help families navigate through very stressful and trying times. The simple documents share with family and healthcare providers your healthcare wishes if you are unable to speak for yourself due to illness or injury. Some estimates state that less than 5% of people over the age of 65 have advance directives.
