    Dr. D’s Medical Update

At the Holy Cross Family Health Center we began providing flu shots during the month of September. Now that we’re in October, it is still a great time to get your flu shots. The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone over the age of 6 months to get a flu shot. So…if you are reading this…you need a flu shot.

    Is the Flu Bugging You?

Posted: Thursday, September 2, 2010 by Westside Sol Newspaper

SAN ANTONIO, TX - With our children and grandchildren back in school, it is time to begin talking about flu shots. In September, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will begin a campaign called “Flu Ends With U” in an effort to increase vaccination rates. This month’s column is my effort to help with the process.

For the first time, everyone 6 months and older should get the vaccine. Yes, that means everyone. The only exceptions are people with an allergy to eggs or if your doctor discourages it due to other health reasons. Those at greatest risk are children less than 5 years old, adults over 65 and pregnant women. Certain medical conditions also increase a person’s risk for having complications from the flu. Things like asthma, chronic lung disease (COPD, emphysema, cystic fibrosis), heart disease, kidney problems, liver problems, obesity and diabetes are included on the list. If you have one of these conditions, it is even more important to get your flu shot as soon as they are available.

    Preventive Health Care for Men

Posted: Wednesday, June 16, 2010 by Westside Sol Newspaper

SAN ANTONIO, TX - Happy Father’s Day! This month, it is the men’s turn for a health reminder. Unlike women who are “too busy,” most men avoid doctors because they often think “nothing is wrong with me.” While that may be true, problems can be addressed
much more easily when found earlier.

The following three tests are effective at identifying problems early—before serious problems occur. First, screening for colon cancer is very important after 50 years of age. A colonoscopy is an exam performed by a gastroenterologist to look for signs of colon cancer. Once the test is done and results are negative, another test usually isn’t needed for another 10 years.

    Preventive Health Care for Women

Posted: Wednesday, May 12, 2010 by Westside Sol Newspaper

SAN ANTONIO, TX - Feliz Dia De Las Madres! In honor of all of the important women in our lives, I would like to encourage women of all ages to participate in National Women’s Health Week, May 9-15. Part of National Women’s Health Week, National Women’s Checkup Day is on May 10. On this day, women are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their healthcare provider for a checkup and screening exams. During that visit, they should discuss which of the many screening tests are right for them.

    Powerful Primary Care

Posted: Wednesday, October 15, 2008 by MSIDE Magazine

At age 10, Dr. Manuel Quinones and his family were driving home in pouring rain from an outing at his uncle’s ranch when a driver traveling in the opposite direction lost control of his car and slammed into their vehicle head-on.

Quinones suffered a broken arm and third degree burns on his left leg, which resulted in a month-long stay at Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital. The loving care and attention he received from doctors and nurses left a lasting impression on the young boy.
