    Dr. D's April Medical Update

Posted: Wednesday, April 2, 2014 by Michael Dominguez, MD

Welcome to Spring time in San Antonio! Every Spring, when I smell the sweet scent of Texas Mountain Laurels, I’m taken back to my first Spring at The University of Texas at Austin. I had no idea what I was smelling, but I knew it was special and I loved it. Now, I have a Mountain Laurel in front of our home and I get to walk under its fragrant branches every day. Some of you are suffering with allergies due to all of the other tress blooming at this time, and I am sorry. Join with me in rejoicing that Spring is here and warm days are ahead.

For some people, the entire month of March is a reason to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras. For others, it is the beginning of the season of Lent, a time of preparation before Easter. In addition to those events, at HealthTexas, we’re observing Nutrition Month.

    Dr. D's Medical Update

As we begin another year, I hope this column finds you and your family fully recovered from a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. In the 16 years I’ve been in practice, it seems like patients would like time to stop from the week before Thanksgiving until after New Year’s. Trying to make changes in treatment or to get patients to follow a diet is a real challenge. I think that is just human nature.

    Dr. Dominguez's November Medical Update

Posted: Friday, November 1, 2013 by Dr. Michael Dominguez

Before discussing this month’s topic, I’d like to encourage all families with children in athletics to have their players perform a baseline concussion/mental function test. This past month, one of my daughters suffered a mild concussion while playing soccer for her middle school team. We didn’t think much of it until she came home with a headache from school the next Monday. A mental function test showed that she was significantly impaired. She required 4 days of brain rest before she could return to school. If we had done a baseline test, we would have known how impaired she was from the start and when she could return to school. Two things I would encourage you to do:

    Dr. D's Medical Update

As you may have seen at your local pharmacy or grocery store, it is time for your flu shot. At HealthTexas Medical Group, we’ve been offering flu shots for a few weeks. Now that we’re in October, it is still a great time to get your flu shots. The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone over the age of 6 months to get a flu shot. So…if you are reading this…you need a flu shot. If you have small children who can’t read yet and they are older than 6 months, they need it, too.

As in past years, May is Arthritis Awareness Month and I’d like to use this month’s article to discuss the more common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA). According to the Arthritis Foundation website, www.fightarthritispain.org, 27 million Americans have and live with osteoarthritis. I often tell patients that OA is “wear and tear” arthritis.

    Dr. D's Medical Update

For the beginning of spring, I’m going to cover two topics this month. I’ve been encouraged recently by some of my patients who have taken charge of their health and made dramatic changes. For some, it was beginning to pay attention to their diet and start losing weight. For others, it was simply starting to take their medications as we discussed and thereby getting control of their conditions.

Over the past several years, NSIDE MD has had the pleasure of profiling some of the leading medical professionals in our community, including several who have been voted as Top Doctor in San Antonio® or even Texas Super Doctor®. However, it is a rare opportunity to profile someone selected as one of the Best Doctor’s in America®, a tremendous honor bestowed by Harvard University.  It’s even more special to find someone who has received that recognition for the last 17years, consecutively.

For the month of July, I'm going to take a different approach with this article. More and more, I'm seeing patients who need to make changes in their lives. Some of the changes need to be drastic, others are relatively small. In all cases, the change can result in a significant benefit, but it is still a difficult process.

This May, as we should be preparing for Mother's Day, I am preparing to observe the holiday without my mom for the first time. My mom, Frances Chaires Dominguez, passed away two days after Valentine's Day in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Thankfully, I was able to see and speak with her before she died. As a result of my mom's death, I would like to share some insights gathered through the course of her illness.

I am very familiar with this subject and thought that by sharing my experiences, I might bring the issues a little closer to home.
